Finaliza con éxito el encuentro natureWatch Somiedo donde se plantearon potenciar los miradores para disfrutar de la fauna y el paisaje de Somiedo.

The Interpretation Center of the Natural Park of Somiedo hosted, as ecoturismo.com had already announced, this weekend, the fifth edition of ‘natureWatch Somiedo’: a meeting of Nature Observation Tourism and Conservation of biodiversity through Ecotourism. In other words, an invitation to the orderly development and promotion of one of the tourist modalities with the greatest growth potential in the north of Spain: Ecotourism based on the observation of the geology, flora and fauna.

The mayor of Somiedo, Belarmino Fernández, told COPE that “we intend to combine nature, rural tourism and all this with sustainability, which are objectives that we have been working on for a long time and that these meetings help us to promote”.

Fernández also explained that they are “promoting the viewpoints to enjoy the fauna and landscape of Somiedo, but the brown bears are the big star”. However, the Somedano alderman clarifies that “at this time of year it is relatively easy to see them, but we do it in a responsible way, with a model that does not harm their habitat”.

And the meeting closed on Sunday, May 15, with a guided tour of the La Pornacal braña, from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm. Accompanied by experts, the participants in the meeting visited the main braña of Somiedo to learn about the problems of its conservation and the possibilities of its ecotourism use. Discussion in the field on conservation of the brañas and ecotourism. Afterwards, we returned to Pola de Somiedo to conclude with a meal.

NatureWatch 2017 was included by UNWTO among the partner events of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism and also incorporated in the International Year Report to the United Nations General Assembly.

NatureWatch revolves around the fundamental pillars of ecotourism: the natural resources and the companies that make possible the ecotourism experiences demanded, consumed and enjoyed by thousands of people every year. In 2022 they celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Natura 2000 Network.
