Since 2000, Somiedo has been a part of the UNESCO's Network of Biosphere Reserves. It is one of the most valuable areas in the Cantabrian Range, with a high degree of conservation and a unique environmental and landscape diversity, housing most of the characteristic ecosystems and species of the range.
