Water

Source of life

Somiedo, full of lakes, lagoons, streams, rivers, springs and canals, could not fail to give special prominence to water. Throughout the council we can contemplate wash houses, “ol.leras” (old refrigerators built with stone masonry through which water circulated to preserve milk), mills or “light factories”. Among these “factories” stands out “La Malva”, a centenary hydroelectric power plant pioneer in Asturias, and also renewable. All this constitutes an ethnographic, architectural and industrial heritage, to which the people of Somedano pay tribute on the night of San Juan, where, following the Celtic tradition, the fountains, washing places, mills and wells of the Council are adorned with flowers so that the first girl who drinks from the “enramada” fountain will have fortune in love and health, as well as eternal beauty.
